The Native Cooking Award is an international competition for chefs at Michelin star level or an equivalently high level. The competition is a yearly event at the Knuthenlund Estate on the island of Lolland, Denmark.
Each participating country is represented by a team of four chefs. The teams have 6 hours to prepare a three-course menu based only on the raw materials and processed foods that form part of this year's competition. These may include herbs, berries and mushrooms, which the teams may find in the wild around Knuthenlund. All chefs compete on equal terms. There is no information whatsoever of this year’s raw materials and foods until the evening prior to the competition. For the competition, each team will have access to identical kitchens - without electrical appliances - and they will also be given two kettle grills. The Native Cooking Award takes place in the open, and the audience has a unique opportunity to follow the chefs’ work at a very close range.

In 2007, The Knuthenlund Estate turned into organic production. Today, the estate is one of Denmark's largest organic farms with pigs, sheep and cows as well as crops.
The Knuthenlund Estate has its own dairy, where they produce cheese from cow and sheep milk. Over the years, cheeses from Knuthenlund have won numerous awards at international cheese competitions.
The estate also has a farm shop where you can buy dairy products and charcuterie. Apart from Knuthenlund's own products, you can also buy locally produced food together with organic food from selected manufacturers outside Lolland-Falster.
Read more about Knuthenlund and its farm shop here.
Lolland-Falster is favoured by special climatic and geological conditions, making the area particularly suitable for agricultural production.
This is the reason why crops from these particular islands develop more flavour and nuances, making them especially sought after among gourmets and food producers all over Denmark.
